KHARKOV

RECLAIMING THE LAND

This 18 ha area is part of a waterlogged plain on the banks of Kharkov’s main river. The whole zone will be raised to overcome flood risk to become an established residential area.

The brief called for a mixture of apartment dwellings, support retail and a separate villa community. The site is split in the middle by a strip of land owned by the City and it is proposed that this area will become a landscaped park giving pedestrian access to the nearby leisure facilities along the riverbank to the west.

The intention is to provide medium / low rise accommodation built largely around private courtyards encouraging interaction between residents and to create a sense of community. This approach is new to modern Ukraine where residential development is still dominated by large scale tower projects.
